Twitter is turning into a social media platform for leftists, with the site gaining traction among young people, progressives and liberals who feel that social media platforms have become a vehicle for the left to advance their cause.
The company has gained more followers in the last year, with almost 13 million in total, according to a post from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in July 2017.
In the post, Dorsey praised the new left-leaning audience for its “support of social justice, tolerance and diversity.”
Twitter has been praised by progressive politicians for its support of a diversity of viewpoints on the platform.
The site has also been hailed for its liberal bent.
In December 2017, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said that the company is now a “safe space” for liberals and progressive values.
He also cited the company’s “opposition to corporate interests.”
Twitter’s recent growth in popularity comes amid concerns about political bias on the site.
In September, Twitter faced backlash after the company deleted a story from an anti-Trump social media campaign after a user complained that the account was “racist.”
The user, who claimed to be a former staffer for former Vice President Mike Pence, was not identified.
Twitter said the account belonged to the company.
The user’s account was then taken down.
After Twitter removed the account, users called for the company to investigate its bias in handling the story.
The account was later reinstated, but a year later, Twitter removed all of its anti-right-wing content.
Twitter has also come under criticism from a number of right-wing groups, including the Tea Party Patriots, who recently demanded the company shut down a conservative news site for publishing a story critical of President Donald Trump.
In a series of tweets, the group claimed that Twitter had taken the right-leaning site down, and demanded that the social media company be shut down.
“Twitter has gone beyond censoring conservatives, and it is now censoring the right,” the group said in a statement.
Twitter responded by saying that it is “deeply sorry” for the situation and that it has removed content from conservative sites, including Breitbart News.
Twitter is now also facing criticism from Democrats and liberals for its response to a report that the tech company is censoring conservative news sites.
In June, the New York Times reported that Twitter was censoring news stories on Breitbart News after it learned of a story by the conservative outlet that suggested the company was trying to silence conservatives.
The Times also reported that the censoring was prompted by a complaint by the New Hampshire chapter of the National Rifle Association.
The issue is still being investigated by Twitter.
“Our goal is to help people find news they care about and help people share it with their friends and followers,” the company said in response to the Times report.
Twitter also apologized for the issue in a blog post, saying that “a mistake was made and we are making it right.”
Twitter said that it “never knowingly or intentionally” allowed users to report content as hateful or hate speech.
“We’re taking steps to ensure that people are getting their content back in a timely fashion, and we’re working to remove these reports as quickly as possible,” the statement said.
A tweet by @mike_watson, a conservative Twitter user, claimed that tweets on the account were being “severed and banned” because they were “hate speech.”
The account had more than 1.5 million followers as of October 2017, and was also the most retweeted user on Twitter.
Other conservative Twitter users have also been targeted for their tweets.
A woman named Katherine Johnson, who is also a conservative, has been accused of “hate crimes” on Twitter after posting a tweet accusing the Republican senator of being a rapist.
She has also said that President Donald Trumps inauguration is a fake, and said that people in the audience should be more outraged about the event than they are about Trump’s election.
Johnson is also the creator of a parody Twitter account, @katherinjones, which was shut down in December 2018.
Twitter suspended Johnson’s account in January 2019.
Johnson, however, continued to tweet.
“It’s like an endless stream of rape threats on Twitter,” Johnson told the Washington Post in January.
Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.
A former Twitter employee who has left the company and who spoke to Breitbart News on condition of anonymity said the company has not done enough to prevent harassment and abuse of conservatives.
“This is something that we should be concerned about because of the way it’s being promoted,” the former employee said.
“If you’re on the left, it’s just a matter of time before you get a death threat or rape threat.
You’re not alone.”
